Virgil J. Stevens, 93, passed away Tuesday, November 3, 2015 of natural causes in Palm Springs, California. Virgil was born November 6, 1922, to Wayne and Viola Stevens in Medina.
He married Laverne Walter, a registered nurse, in 1948 in Medina. He was a painting and wallpaper contractor for over 50 years. He started his business, Medina Decorators, in the 1950’s, where he painted many of the Historic homes in Medina. He moved to Palm Springs, California in 1959, where his clients included Arthur Elrod & Assoc. and many celebrities – Bob Hope, Frank Sinatra and Liberace to name a few.
He was a member of the Painters Local Union #1627 and was the Union’s Business Agent until his retirement. He was chairman of the Christian Business Men’s Committee (CBMC) for many years, where they ministered God’s love to the inmates at the Banning Jail Camp. He was a member of the Palm Springs Community Church, where he served as an Elder and Superintendent of the Junior High Sunday School. Virgil served in the U.S. Navy from 1942-1945 during World War II and the Akron National Guard from 1946-1949. Virgil was a loving husband and father. He was caring, generous, loved to laugh, had a quick wit and will be missed by his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife Laverne of 67 years; daughters, Colleen (Steve Schindler) Stevens and Connie (Ron Harviston) Stevens; sons, Scott (Karen, deceased) Stevens and Doug (Tamara) Stevens and four grandchildren, Patrick, Mathew, Brett and Alicia.
He was preceded in death by one brother and four sisters.
Services were held Wednesday, November 18, 2015, at the Riverside National Cemetery.
