Kenneth “Ken” Thewlis

Thewlis_KennethAA - don't move -OBIT FLAGKenneth “Ken” Thewlis, 76, of Perrysville, Ohio, left this world to join our Lord Jesus Christ in heaven, Saturday, March 14, 2015 in Haines City, Florida. Ken was born December 19, 1938 in Eccles, West Virginia, to the late Fred and Ethel (nee McElroy) Thewlis. He lived in West Virginia until the age of 14, when his moved with his family to Medina County. After Ken graduated from Brunswick High School, he joined the U.S. Marine Corps Reserves and served eight years.

Ken married Nila (nee Klinect) in June of 1958 and were blessed with four children, Richard, Duane, Peggy and Holly.

Ken retired from the Parma Plant (GM Corporation) after 39 years and 30 of those years as a Pipefitter and HVAC Specialist. Ken had been a registered folunteer with the Boy Scouts of America for 49 years. He served as a leader and committee member with both Cub Pack 3500 and Troop 500, as well as Troop 501. He was awarded the “Silver Beaver”, the highest award for service to youth.

Ken was extremely active at York United Methodist Church for 35 years, Sunday School teacher, Youth Leader, Trustee and many more. He was a well known general handyman.

When Ken and Nila moved to Perrysville after he retired, they belonged to the Loudonville UMC. There, he was chosen by Pastor Gary Pollock to be the Project Manager for a Habitat for Humanity Home in Orrville, in 2000.

Ken was a current member of Three Crosses United Methodist Fellowship Church in Butler, Ohio since 2012. He also was a Little League coach and Hot Stove manager in Valley City for over 15 years.

Ken will be greatly missed by his beloved wife, Nila; children, Reverend Richard (Jill) Thewlis of Beloit, Ohio; Duane (Beverly) Thewlis of Cartersville, Georgia; Peggy (Steve) Stiger of Oviedo, Florida and Holly (Michael) Stout of Medina; grandfather of 13 and great-grandfather of three; brother of David Thewlis of Grafton, Fred Thewlis, Jr. of Medina and Robert Thewlis of West Virginia.

He was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral Service will be 11 A.M., Friday, March 27, 2015, at York United Methodist Church, 6566 Norwalk Road, Medina, where family will receive friends from 10 until 10:30 A.M., prior to the service in the church vestibule. Calling hours are Thursday, March 26, 2015, from 6 until 9 P.M., at the Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Road, Valley City. Burial will be at York Township Cemetery, Mallet Creek.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests memorials may be made to Boy Scout Troop #500, in care of York Methodist Church; Three Cross Methodist Fellowship Building Fund or to the York Methodist Church.
