Lawrence G. Scheck

OBIT FLAGLawrence G. Scheck, 92, of Spencer, passed away Friday, March 28, 2014 at Burbank Parke in Burbank. He was born March 6, 1922 in Bath, Ohio, to Clarence and Mary (Coy) Scheck.

He graduated from Bath High School and entered the U.S. Army in 1942. He was assigned to the Army Specialized Training Program at the University of Utah. Eventually he landed at Le Havre, France on January 29, 1945 receiving battle stars for the Rhineland and Central European Campaign. His division was sent to Southern Germany and Austria where the remains of Hitler’s army were captured or surrendered. He received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, Expert Rifleman and Sharpshooter Badge, Good Conduct Medal, American and European Campaign Medals, and the African Middle Eastern Medal with two campaign stars, WWII Victory Medal, Army of Occupation Medal with Germany Clasp, Honorable WWII Service Lapel Button and the Bronze Star Medal.

He was a member of the Chatham VFW and Lodi American Legion. He operated Scheck’s Hardware in Spencer from 1960-1969. During those years he graduated from Kent State University with a degree in Education and later received his Master’s degree in 1982. He taught in the Chatham Local Schools as well as Mapleton Junior High and later at Smithville, Lorain and Medina County JVS. He retired in 1986 as the Adult Education Director of the Medina County Career Center. He enjoyed building and construction as well as repairing and remodeling.

He is survived by three sons, Martin (Cheryl) Scheck of Seville, Douglas (Cheri) Scheck of Wellington, Christopher (Letitia) of West Jefferson, Ohio; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren, whom he dearly loved.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Audrey (Wacker); daughter, Cindy Lipani; and brothers, Donald, Howard, Leroy and Harold.

Funeral Service will be held Monday, March 31, 2014 at 11 A.M. at Parker & Son Funeral Home, 202 East Main St., Spencer. Pastor Reid Firestone will officiate. Burial will follow at Spencer Cemetery. Visitation will be Sunday, March 30, 2014 from 2 to 5 P.M. in the funeral home.
