Jay Harris, peacefully passed away Tuesday, September 17, 2013, at his home with his loving family at his side, at the age of 88. He was born November 1, 1924 in Cleveland, growing up in Youngstown and Phoenix, Arizona, where he graduated from high school.
Jay served in the U.S. Navy as a pilot during World War II. He attended Bradley University in Peoria, Illinois before coming to Ohio, where he settled in Lakewood and founded Feltis Harris Jewelers. He joined the trades, where he finished out his career as a pipefitter and a member of Pipefitters Local 120. Jay spent his entire life devoted to his family and friends. He also served as a volunteer for the Litchfield Fire Department and as a special deputy with the Medina County Sheriff’s Department. His loves were few, his family came first. He also loved traveling, flying and fishing in the earlier days.
Jay is survived by his five living children, Mark (Susan), Janet (Bill), Jeanne (Tim), Tracy and Suzanne; 10 grandchildren; and four great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Betty of 53 years; his youngest son, James; and his parents, Jay and Phyllis Harris.
A funeral service will be held at 11 A.M. Wednesday, September 25, 2013 at the Bauer Funeral Home, 2089 Columbia Road, Valley City. Calling hours are from 6 to 9 P.M., Tuesday, September 24, 2013 at the funeral home, and one hour prior to the funeral Wednesday, September 25, 2013. Burial will be at Crow Road Cemetery, in Litchfield.
