Martin_RubyRuby Martin (Potter), died Wednesday, March 25, 2015, following a nearly 20 year battle with Parkinson’s disease, at Cherith at Willow Brook in Delaware, Ohio.

Ruby is survived by her children, Kay (Jon Rickard of Lodi, Ohio), Janet (Matthew Walworth of Centennial, Colorado), Greg (Cindy of Winchester, Virginia), and Scott (Sheila of Delaware, Ohio) and grandchildren, Emily Rickard (Tyler Mele of Los Angeles, California), Samantha (Jeremy Koontz of McLean, Virginia), Maggie Rickard (Lodi, Ohio), Elizabeth Martin (Washington, D.C.) and Grace, Ella, and Gina Martin (Delaware, Ohio).

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Joel Rubin and Katie (Obrodo) Potter (Barberton, Ohio); sister, Mildred Maylor (Massilon, Ohio); brother, David Potter (Barberton, Ohio); loving husband, John G. Martin Jr. and cherished grandson, Martin Emerson Walworth.

Ruby was born on September 25, 1933 in Barberton, Ohio. She graduated from Barberton High School in 1950 and Heidelberg College in 1954. Ruby married John G. Martin Jr. in 1955 and they started married life in Wadsworth, Ohio. Ruby and John built a life together as they transferred with Babcock and Wilcox from Ohio to Illinois, to Michigan and eventually back to Ohio while raising their four children. Ruby’s professional career began as an elementary school teacher (1954 to 1955) and, after her children began school, continued as a preschool teacher in the 1970′s. In 1978 Ruby realized a dream when she purchased The Village Booksmith, an independent bookstore in Medina, which she operated with John for 18 years. During this time Ruby grew the bookstore from a small shop to a destination place in Medina. Ruby took pride in the diverse inventory she selected for the store; meeting the literary needs of a growing community in the time prior to big box stores and the internet. She delighted in specializing in children’s literature and, together, Ruby and John serviced the literacy needs of schools ranging from Columbus to Amish schools in Holmes County to urban districts across North East Ohio as well as the general public. An avid reader, Ruby could find the right book for any customer. In 1984 Ruby and a small group of Medina business people orchestrated the first holiday Candle Light Walk. Now, 30 years later, this event continues and has become a Medina tradition. In addition to being a bookseller, Ruby was active with the international student exchange program AFS as an area director. To this day, there are AFS exchange students around the world who call Ruby, “Mom.” The importance of family was the cornerstone of Ruby’s character. Ruby’s strong faith and her church family were important to her throughout her life. Family was often the focus of Ruby and John’s travels around the world as they would plan trips to coincide with family reunions and celebrations.

A memorial service celebrating Ruby’s life will be held at 10 A.M., Saturday, May 30, 2015 at Liberty Presbyterian Church, 7080 Olentangy River Rd. Delaware, Ohio, 43015. Donations may be made in Ruby’s name to the National Parkinson Foundation of Central & Southeast Ohio, 2800 Corporate Exchange Dr. Suite 265 Columbus, Ohio 43231 or on-line at http://www.centralohioparkinson.org.

Perry_RonaldRonald Dale Perry, 77, of Millcreek Township, Millersburg, Ohio, died Saturday, April 11, 2015, working on the farm he loved. Ron was born August 23, 1937, at Tom’s Creek in Wayne County, West Virginia, in the log home in which his mother was born. He was the son of Andy Kern and Letha Lovell (Hale) Perry, and was the youngest brother of Gorman Kern Perry and Russell Samuel Perry.

He was a graduate of the Class of 1955 at South Point High School, Lawrence County, Ohio. After Ron’s graduation and 18th birthday, he made his way to Brook Park, where he gained employment at the Ford Motor Company Cleveland Engine Plant complex, eventually earning his journeyman’s card as a skilled tradesman in machine repair. Ron worked at the Foundry, Engine Plant #1, and Engine Plant #2 for 42 years at Ford, until his retirement in 1997. In 1958, Ron married Flossie “Flo” Carol Salmons, to whom he was married for 32 years. He had two sons with Flo, Zane Dale Perry and Corey Daniel Perry. In 1974, Ron, Flo and the boys moved from their farm in Lafayette Township of Medina County to their farm in Millcreek Township of Coshocton County. Ron was an avid hunter and fisherman and relished his times outdoors, including working on his beloved farm. He enjoyed playing the five-string banjo and making turkey calls of various types. Following his retirement from Ford, Ron spent countless hours tending to his farm, planting trees and caring for the property in an attempt to create a sportsman’s paradise.

Ron’s final moments on this earth were spent planting trees on the property; however, as much as he loved his farm and the outdoors, Ron loved his family most of all.

He was preceded in death by his parents and brothers.

He is survived by two sons Zane Perry of Virginia Beach, Virginia and Zane’s children, Brook Elizabeth (Peter) Orvis, Kathryn Ellyn Perry, Zane Dale Perry, Jr., Zachary John Perry and Zoe Michelle Perry; son, Corey (Tania) Perry of Delaware, Ohio and their children, Coree Rae (Daniel) Harrison, Andrew Taylor Nesselroad, Nathan Dale Perry, Samuel Corbett Perry and Raegan Kathryn Perry. Also surviving are countless cousins, nieces, nephews and friends. While all of his family grieves his loss, they are comforted by the countless memories of spending time with him hunting, camping, fishing and listening to his countless stories of growing up in the coal-laced mountains of West Virginia. Ronald will be remembered as a loving father, doting grandfather and trusted friend.

Calling hours will be Monday, April 20, 2015, from 5 until 8 P.M., at Free Funeral Home, 788 S. Second St., in Coshocton. Funeral will be Tuesday, April 21, 2015, at 1 P.M., at the funeral home, followed by interment at Shepler Cemetery in Millcreek Township, Coshocton.

Eleanor Jacqueline Byars “Jackie” Hilton, passed away peacefully at White Oak Manor (York, South Carolina) Wednesday, April 15, 2015, at age 90. She was a devoted mother and wife, a servant to her church, a connoisseur of thrift stores, and a lifelong collector of things old and new.

Jackie was born in Rock Hill, South Carolina, July 27, 1924, the middle daughter of Lillie Mae Wisher Byars and David Madison Byars. She worked at Arcade Cotton Mill and met her future husband,William J. “Bill” Hilton, Sr. when he visited West End Baptist Church near the the end of World War II. They moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, where they were married on August 31, 1945 and began growing their family. Following birth of a fourth child, Jackie and Bill moved the family “back home” to Rock Hill in 1961. There Jackie continued to raise their children, including a fifth one. A strong believer in education, Jackie finished her GED after age 50. She and Bill made sure their five children finished high school and enabled four of them to graduate from Newberry College.

Jackie and Bill became pillars of Grace Lutheran Church (Rock Hill). She showed commitment to her faith by preaching the Children’s Sermon on Sunday mornings, by serving on church council, and by acting as the dynamic leader of Jubilees, the Church’s group for senior members. Following Bill’s death in 1984, she raised funds in his memory for a beautiful stained glass window in the main sanctuary, an act that helped rejuvenate the church and led the way to a long-needed building expansion.

Jackie was predeceased by her parents; husband and sister, Clara Byars Roberts.

She is survived by sister, Nellie Mae Byars Hixson of Castle Hayne, North Carolina and five children, William J. “Bill” Hilton, Jr. (Sue) of York and Stanley R.
