Robert Schubert, 93, of Medina, passed away Wednesday, August, 5, 2015, at Hospice of Medina County, after a short illness. Robert was born May 2, 1922 in Chicago, Illinois, to the late Harry and Eleanor (Freedman) Schubert.
He later moved and started a family in Dover, Ohio. Robert later moved with his family to Brunswick, where he and his wife, Vera Rogers, of 35 years, started a cabinet company, Mica Made Mfg., which later relocated to Medina. He loved to fish and spent many summers at his home in Ear Falls Ontario, Canada.
Robert is a veteran of World War II, where he earned several medals, including the Air Medal with Oak Leaf in 1944, the Purple Heart with the 460th Bombardment Group, and the European-African Middle Eastern Service medal, among other distinctions. Serving with the 763rd Bomb Squadron in the 15th Army Air Force, while piloting a B-24 bomber, known as the “Liberator,” he safely “ditched” the plane as it took on enemy fire in the Adriatic Sea. He and 10 other airmen were later rescued by the Italian Resistance. Bob went on to fly 24 more missions.
Mr. Schubert is survived by two daughters, Karyn (Stanley) Thomas and Catherine (Raymond) Ryks. He will also leave behind four grandchildren, Amanda (David) Brower, Gretchen (Stephen) Richmond, Robert (Brad) Bean and Michael Bean and eight great-grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Luke Brower, Ian, Meredith and Zoe Bean, Jakob and Luisa Richmond. He is also survived by loving nieces and nephews and remembered by many friends and neighbors.
He is preceded in death by his loving wife, Vera, originally from Cadiz, Ohio; brother, Donald Schubert and sister, Lenore (Schubert) McDonald.
Services will be held Saturday, August 8, 2015, at 11 A.M., at the Waite Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina. Family will receive friends one hour prior to services on Saturday, at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Spring Grove Cemetery in Medina.
