Herbert_BakerAA - don't move -OBIT FLAGBaker W. Herbert, 83, passed away Thursday, December 11, 2014.

He served honorably in the U.S. Coast Guard for over 20 years, retiring in 1969. He enjoyed a second career with State Farm Insurance Company, retiring in 1989. A dedicated public servant, Baker served as a volunteer fire fighter in Lafayette Township for many years. Later, he was elected and proudly served as the Township Clerk and Zoning Inspector for Lafayette Township. He was a founding member of the Coast Guard Combat Veterans Association, and later served as both secretary and treasurer. He was Vice President and an active member of the Ohio Public Employee Retirees, Inc., Chapter #38, Medina. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (Post 6892) and the American Legion (Post 0523.) A man of strong convictions, he often shared his views through lively letters to editor of the Medina County Gazette.

Baker was born in Washington, D.C. on October 26, 1931, the youngest child of Francis Irving and Mary Verlinda Herbert. He married Marylou Witcraft June 21, 1952 and enjoyed 62 years of marriage. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend to many.

He was preceded in death by his son, James Patrick Herbert; sister, Julie Herbert and brothers, Francis and Harry Herbert.

He is survived by his wife, Marylou; daughters, Patricia Schiesswohl, Linda Romano, and Kate de Medeiros; son, Jeffrey Herbert; sister, Carmel Auth and brother, Bernard Herbert. He was the loving grandfather to Ryan Kolarov, Jamey and Robbie Schiesswohl, Bradford and Max Herbert, and Ian and Dillon de Medeiros and great-grandfather to Caleb Kolarov.

Memorial services will be held Monday, December 15, 11 A.M., at Leroy United Methodist Church, 7 Park Circle, Westfield Center. Pastor David Rittgers will officiate. Family will receive friends Sunday, December 14, from 3 until 5 P.M., at the Waite & Son Funeral Home, 765 N. Court St., Medina. Baker will be privately laid to rest at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery.

In 2013, Baker’s family established the Baker Herbert Scholarship at Cloverleaf High School to recognize his love of learning and support of community. The first scholarship was awarded in May, 2014. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the “Baker Herbert Scholarship”, P.O. Box 544, Westfield Center, OH 44251.
